Description
In order to maintain warranty on many electrical components (e.g. car audio amplifiers), it is important to ensure you are correctly choosing the proper electrical power cable for the application. Unfortunately, many car audio retailers use improper cabling for their installations. Remember to always ask what cable is being used prior to engaging your retailer.
Oxygen Free Copper (OFC) cabling has much higher electrical conductivity than Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA) cabling. OFC has a conductivity of over 100% International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) while CCA has a conductivity of around 65% IACS, therefore with more resistance in aluminum wiring, you will get more heat buildup in the wire and you will have more voltage drop at the amplifier causing loss of power or more current consumption.
CCA cable heat buildup is dangerous and can melt the coating on the wire, melt carpet, and in rare cases, it may catch on fire.
CCA is not approved for use in any application by the National Electric Code (NEC) for low or high voltage cabling due to it being a fire hazard.
CCA is not approved by UL (Underwriter Laboratories) due to it being a fire hazard.
OFC cabling has greater durability and resistance to corrosion. OFC cabling is made from 99.99% pure copper, which is free from any oxygen or other impurities that can cause corrosion. On the other hand, CCA cabling is made from a thin layer of copper cladding over an aluminum core, which is prone to corrosion and oxidation over time. This can result in signal degradation and a shorter lifespan of the cable.
OFC cabling is more flexible and easier to work with than CCA cabling. OFC cabling is more pliable and can bend more easily, making it easier to route and install in tight spaces. CCA cabling, on the other hand, is stiffer and more difficult to bend, which can make installation more challenging.
OFC cabling is generally considered to have better signal shielding and noise rejection than CCA cabling. OFC cabling is often equipped with a braided shield or a foil shield to block out electromagnetic interference and reduce noise, while CCA cabling may have a lower quality shield or no shield at all.
OFC cabling is often more environmentally friendly than CCA cabling. OFC cabling is made from pure copper, which is a highly recyclable material, while CCA cabling contains both copper and aluminum, making it more difficult and costly to recycle.
CCA cable is not approved for use by ANSI/TIA in Ethernet cable applications due to poor data and PoE transmission characteristics.
Our Oxygen Free Copper power wire incorporates high counts of finely stranded copper and high-quality matte PVC insulation that is oil and extreme temperature resistant. All of this combines to create power wire that is extremely flexible with very low resistance, but yet durable enough to hold up to the extremes of the automotive environment with the best power handling you can find.
To sum it up, there is no substitute for OFC wire for automotive electronics.
